U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) announced today that he is bailing after he was recently replaced as Speaker.

McCarthy made the announcement in a video shared to social media that he would be departing at the end of the year.

In a post to X, McCarthy said, “As the son of a firefighter from Bakersfield, my story is the story of America.”

“For me, every moment came with a great deal of devotion and responsibility,” McCarthy insisted.

McCarthy explained, “Serving you in Congress and as the 55th Speaker of the House has been my greatest honor.”

McCarthy also published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal where he claimed, “I know my work is only getting started.”

U.S. House Rep Mike Johnson (R-LA) was selected by the House to be the new Speaker in October after McCarthy was ousted from the position.
