There’s an old saying that politics makes for strange bedfellows, but in many cases, money is very likely the motivating factor for unexpected pairings.

After Donald Trump surprised the D.C. political class and actually defeated the failed Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, in 2016, there was no hotter gig in politics than Republicans willing to speak out against Trump. The grifters at the Lincoln Project cashed in more than anyone in publicly opposing Trump, but they had plenty of company in the likes of Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who sacrificed long-term career success as GOP lawmakers for short-term media adulation and the ensuing fame that came with it.

But few surrenders were more puzzling than that of Mr. Kellyanne Conway, aka George Conway, the husband of Trump’s campaign manager and senior counselor. George was a cofounder of the Lincoln Project and, for all intents and purposes, sacrificed his marriage to cash in on the anti-Trump bonanza — he announced his divorce from Kellyanne last year — so imagine the surprise when Trump shared a photo of a teary-eyed George rocking a Make America Great Again hat while evidently celebrating Trump’s 2016 victory.

Trump wrote, “Mr. Kellyanne Conway celebrating my Victory in 2016!”

A second photograph shared by the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee shows an enthusiastic George taking a video of Trump amid a crowd of supporters.

After defeating Clinton, Trump even considered appointing George, who was educated at Yale University and Harvard Law School, to the position of Solicitor General, which serves as the nation’s top lawyer representing the United States in cases before the Supreme Court. The appointment went to Noel Francisco and George was later in consideration to become the Justice Department’s Civil Division chief.

He would withdraw his name from consideration, saying it was “not the right time for me to leave the private sector.”

Not long after, Conway began his new career as a Trump critic and continues to ply his newfound trade today for a compromised media that collectively ensured the Republican president’s defeat in 2020 — with a big assist from a lab in Wuhan, China.
