Yo, this guy got out of a DUI in the most insane way possible.

No, he didn’t pass the field sobriety test with one eye closed; he has a Auto-Brewery Syndrome (ABS), “a rare, underdiagnosed medical condition … caused by fermentation of ingested carbohydrate by gut fungi resulting in endogenous production of ethanol.”

This is also called “Gut Fermentation Syndrome.”

I gotta start using this excuse!

No joke though, this guy is home free after being charged with a DUI.

A Belgian man has been acquitted of drunk-driving because he has auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), an extremely rare condition whereby the body produces alcohol, his lawyer has said.

Anse Ghesquiere said on Monday that in “another unfortunate coincidence” her client worked at a brewery, but three doctors who independently examined him had confirmed he had ABS.

What?? This dude works at a brewery?

Does he make the beer himself, or…?

Reports are saying the man hadn’t shown signs of being drunk and that is one of the factors in the judge’s ruling to drop the DUI; but one of the symptoms of Auto-Brewery Syndrome (I’ll never get over that name) is, obviously, being drunk. So he must’ve only produced a tipsy amount of alcohol on the day of the DUI.

In our ABS cohort of patients, the most common risk factor for its causation has been prior use of antibiotics. Antibiotics may have disrupted the fine homeostatic balance and symbiotic relationship between the different types of gut microbiota causing yeast overgrowth. Several patients with diabetes, short bowel syndrome, intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease with strictures), have also been described with ABS.
