A spike in the number of migrants from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) who have been apprehended at the southern U.S. border seems to have even border officials baffled.

An unofficial U.S. Customs and Border Protection report cited by Breitbart News revealed the alarming numbers as nearly 700 Chinese migrants were arrested at the California border – and that was only in one week.

This adds to the more than 26,000 migrants from China whom border agents have apprehended since the start of the 2024 fiscal year in October. The almost 700 migrants from the People’s Republic of China were reportedly caught entering the San Diego region just during the third week of April.

The staggering number is more than three times the number at this same time last year, the outlet noted, citing a “CBP source, not authorized to speak to the media” who conveyed the information to Breitbart Texas.

“The source told Breitbart that China is now within the top ten nationalities encountered by the Border Patrol along the southern border,” according to the outlet. “The bulk of the Chinese nationals are released into the United States almost immediately the source says as China adamantly refuses to take their citizens back.”

“We have only conducted one repatriation flight back to China recently,” the CBP source said. “Until that changes, unless we have specific derogatory information about an individual, we are releasing. There’s just no other option.”

“The agency remains baffled by the continued increase in Chinese migrant arrivals. Twice as many PRC nationals entered Southern California during the third week of April than the entire 2021 fiscal year when a total of 342 PRC nationals were encountered by the Border Patrol along the entire Southwest border,” Breitbart noted. “According to the source, intelligence debriefings yield little information about the migrants and their purpose for entering. The language barrier and the sheer volume of crossings and apprehensions is a major challenge according to the source.”

The concerns come amid FBI Director Christopher Wray’s warning last week that China “has made it clear that it considers every sector that makes our society run as fair game in its bid to dominate on the world stage, and that its plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try to induce panic and break America’s will to resist.”

“We want to focus on the threats posed by the Government of China and not cast aspersions on all the people of China, but governments are people and at this point,” the CBP source told Breitbart. “We are in the dark concerning who is a foe and who is a friend.”

The long journey for many of the Chinese nationals, according to the source, begins in Hong Kong before heading to Turkey and onto Ecuador where no visa is required to enter the country. The migrants then move through Panama’s Darien Gap, through Central America and into Mexico before arriving at the southern U.S. border.

Landing at the U.S. border after traversing multiple nations from the People’s Republic of China can reportedly cost as much as $55,000 in smuggling fees.
