Shots from Mexico were fired toward U.S. Border Patrol agents on Wednesday, prompting a search for the perpetrator.

The incident happened just before 5:00 pm MST in San Elizario, Texas, near International Marker 51 of the border wall, according to Border Report (BR).

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement … that Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector were involved in a ‘use of force incident while responding to reports of shots fired near the border in the Ysleta Station area of responsibility in Texas,’” BR notes.

After the firing of a weapon, Border Patrol asked the Mexican authorities to search across their side for the perpetrator. The Mexican police did just that, searching a 9-mile stretch, but found nothing.

The FBI has since confirmed to Fox News that it’s investigating the shooting as an “assault on federal agents.”

“The FBI El Paso’s Violent Crime Task Force is working closely with the U.S. Custom and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility on this assault on a federal officer investigation,” the FBI said. “As this is an ongoing investigation, no further details may be given at this time.”

U.S. Customers and Border Protection has likewise since confirmed that there were no injuries from the shooting.

This is the second shooting incident to occur along the border in recent weeks.

These incidents come weeks after a new Redfield & Wilton Strategies poll found that only a paltry 20 percent of Americans believe that the Biden administration has  “control over its borders.”

According to Newsweek, which broke the story last month, this marks a decrease of 14 percentage points since August of last year.

“This is a significant blow for the Biden administration with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump having made tightening border control one of the main pillars of his bid for a second White House term,” Newsweek further admitted.

Of the 1,500 eligible voters who participated in Redfield & Wilton Strategies’ border poll, 63 percent replied “no,” the administration doesn’t have control of the border, and 13 percent said they “don’t know.”

Here’s the kicker: A whopping 53 percent of those who said “no” voted for President Joe Biden in 2020, meaning even many of the president’s current or former supporters recognize the reality on the ground.

The poll also asked whether voters were “satisfied or dissatisfied with the government’s current approach towards illegal immigration.”

A 52 percent majority said “dissatisfied,” while a 21 percent delusional minority said “satisfied.”

According to Thomas Gift, who heads the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London, these poll results make it clear that illegal migration will be a top 2024 election issue.

“Not only do fewer voters think that the country has control over its border, the issue has also become more salient,” he told Newsweek. “According to Gallup, 28 percent of respondents now list immigration as America’s most important problem, more than double the number who said that last fall.”

“The same poll shows that respondents are twice as likely to say immigration is the country’s top problem compared to the economy in general. Other issues—from abortion to Russia’s war in Ukraine, to the Israel-Hamas conflict—barely register in comparison,” he added.

All this comes after President Biden claimed in January that there’s no border crisis. As the president was leaving the White House for Camp David, a Fox News reporter bluntly asked him whether or not there was a crisis at the border. The president replied with a “no.”

“No, but I have been pushing them — my Republican colleagues since they got in office. I think we have to make major changes to the border,”  he said without specifying what sort of changes he meant.

The latest border incident comes after an April 14th shooting involving a Texas National Guard soldier.

“Early on the afternoon of 14 April, a National Guard service member assigned to Operation Lone Star discharged a weapon in a border-related incident,” Texas Military Department officials told Army Times after the shooting.

Evidently, the National Guard soldier stumbled on a criminal alien stabbing another criminal alien and then opened fire on the perp, sending him scrambling back into Mexico.
