Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy claims he would have never brokered a deal with Democrats like current Speaker Mike Johnson.

Speaking on a Politico podcast this week, he was asked his thoughts about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to oust Johnson.

As previously reported, Johnson recently made a deal with Democrats to pass a huge foreign aid bill loaded with money for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, prompting outrage from Greene and her allies.

Greene immediately began plotting to oust Johnson through a motion, but the motion failed this week after virtually every congressional Democrat rushed to vote against it.

McCarthy began his response by saying he agreed with the premise that it’s probably not the best time to replace the speaker given that it’s an election year and the 2024 race is, in fact, only months away.

“Trying to find another person to serve is very, very difficult, and it’s chaos for America,” he said, according to Politico.

But, he added, that doesn’t mean he would have done what Johnson did and brokered a deal with Democrats.

“Should I have done a deal?” he asked rhetorically. “I couldn’t live with myself if I did a deal with the Democrats.”

His remarks prompted anger from Democrats who accused him of being an immature bomb thrower instead of a legislator.

The remarks from McCarthy come after the House voted Wednesday 359 to 43 against Greene’s motion to oust Johnson.

The congresswoman had announced the vote a week earlier while unveiling her now famous uniparty hat. It looks like any other ol’ cap, except it says “MUGA” on it in imitation of “MAGA,” which stands for Make America Great Again. “MUGA” meanwhile means Make Ukraine Great Again.

“That’s what this is — the uniparty is Make Ukraine Great Again,” she said during a May 1st press conference. “The uniparty is all about funding every single foreign war. They think this is the business model that needs to be done.”

She then placed the hat on a poster of Speaker Johnson and Democrat House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

She went on to announce the vote.

“This vote will be called next week and I just want to urge all our colleagues to prepare for it,” she said. “It’s the right thing to do for America. It’s time to clean house and get our conference in order and get ready to support President Trump’s agenda, God willing he wins in November.”

Greene also slammed congressional Democrats for deciding to back Johnson’s speakership.

“I can’t wait to see Democrats go out and support a Republican speaker and have to go home to their primaries and have to run for Congress again, having supported a Republican speaker, a Christian conservative,” she said. “I think that’ll play well. I’m excited about it.”

The only problem was that even former President Donald Trump stood against her. Indeed, after the vote failed Wednesday, the former president published a Truth Social post urging Greene to drop her crusade against the speaker.

“I absolutely love Marjorie Taylor Greene,” he wrote. “She’s got Spirit, she’s got Fight, and I believe she’ll be around, and on our side, for a long time to come. However, right now, Republicans have to be fighting the Radical Left Democrats, and all the Damage they have done to our Country.”

“With a Majority of One, shortly growing to three or four, we’re not in a position of voting on a Motion to Vacate. At some point, we may very well be, but this is not the time,” he added.
