A Guatemalan criminal alien was arrested in Florida this past weekend for kidnapping and sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in a van.

Criminal alien Marvin Dionel Perez Lopez, 20, grabbed the 11-year-old by her hand from in front of her apartment building and then forced her into his van, where he proceeded to assault her, according to local station WPEC.

When the girl’s mother realized that her daughter was missing, she went looking for her and spotted the van nearby, after which she started banging on the door and shouting.

“According to sheriff’s deputies, Lopez jumped out of the van and ran away,” WPEC notes. “After the incident, the victim’s mother went to Lopez’s apartment, where his brother was home. The brother called Lopez and told him to come home.”

“The mother waited to confront him. Lopez pleaded with her for forgiveness, but there was no way she could, the mother reportedly said to deputies. Then she called the police,” according to the station.

When the authorities spoke with the little girl, she said that Lopez had forced himself on her and prevented her from leaving the van. The assault reportedly continued until it turned into full-on rape.

When the authorities tried to speak to Lopez meanwhile, he made a dash for it by climbing out a back window and fleeing into an alleyway, but they eventually got a hold of him.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has since confirmed Lopez’s arrest.

“On Saturday, May 4, 2024, suspect, Marvin Perez Lopez, an illegal from Guatemala, was arrested for Kidnapping a Minor under 13 years of age and sexual assault,” a press release from the office reads.

“Through the investigation, detectives learned that Marvin Perez Lopez left Guatemala in early January, crossed through Mexico, turned himself into Border Patrol, and was given a court date for some time in 2027 and released. He found his way to Florida at the end of January 2024,” it continues.

Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw has, to his great credit, admitted a fundamental truth about what Lopez did.

“Here’s a Guatemalan, who came into the country illegally, was stopped by the border people, released, and made his way to South Florida,” he told WPEC. “And now he commits a crime where he held an 11-year-old girl against her will and sexually assaulted her!”

It’s insane, isn’t it?

“We grabbed him,” the sheriff continued. “He’s confessed to the crime. So he’s gonna get tried for a capital crime before he even remotely thinks he’s gonna get deported. He’s gonna do the time here first. The federal government is victimizing the people who live in this country by letting these people in here.”

Exactly.

Lopez is reportedly currently being held in the Palm Beach County jail without bond.

His arrest comes almost exactly a year after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a bill that’d punish some child sex offenders with the death penalty.

“We think that in the worst of the worst cases, the only appropriate punishment is the ultimate punishment,” the governor said at the time.

There was just one small problem.

“This bill runs afoul of a 2008 US Supreme Court decision prohibiting states from applying the death penalty for child rape if the victim did not die,” CNN reported at the time.

“The high court ruled in Kennedy v. Louisiana that the Louisiana statute imposing the death penalty for the rape of a child was unconstitutional under the Eighth Amendment’s Cruel and Unusual Punishment clause,” according to CNN.

DeSantis for his part made it clear he didn’t support the high court’s decision.

“We do not believe the Supreme Court in its current iteration would uphold it,” he said. “And so, we are going to be exploring ways to facilitate some capitals trials if you have the worst of the worst.”

“This bill [the death penalty one] sets up a procedure to be able to challenge that precedent and to be able to say that in Florida we think that the worst of the worst crimes deserve the worst of the worst punishment,” he added.
