House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is launching an investigation of special counsel Jack Smith and his handling of the classified document case against former President Donald Trump.

The Ohio Republican and the House Oversight Committee announced the new investigation into Smith on Monday after a court filing seemed to admit that documents seized by the FBI from Mar-A-Lago had been manipulated in some way.

In a court filing last week, prosecutors admitted that “there are some boxes where the order of items within that box is not the same as in the associated scans,” referring to the materials seized at Trump’s Florida home in 2022. This came after prosecutors assured the court that the documents were “in their original, intact form as seized.”

“The Government acknowledges that this is inconsistent with what Government counsel previously understood and represented to the Court,” read a footnote in the filing.

Jordan fired off a letter to the DOJ’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

“This acknowledgement presents grave concerns about the Department’s commitment to impartial justice, whether the Special Counsel’s Office misled a federal court, whether the Special Counsel’s Office strenuously upheld the ‘highest professional standards’ of the Department of Justice,” Jordan’s letter reads.

“Accordingly, we write to ask what steps the Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility is undertaking to examine these facts and hold accountable attorneys who violated the standards of professional conduct,” the letter continued.

“To that end, legal experts believe that Special Counsel Smith’s filing “essentially is an admission of witness tampering,’” Jordan wrote. “The admission, unfortunately, reflects a broader trend of attorneys on Special Counsel Smith’s team violating ethical norms in persecution of President Trump.”

During an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday, Jordan called out the “irony” of Smith “mishandling the very documents that he’s charging President Trump with mishandling”.

The lawmaker slammed the “double standard” that has allowed President Joe Biden to avoid charges of mishandling classified documents while Trump is being persecuted.

“You can’t make this stuff up,” Jordan said on “Hannity.”

The Ohio Republican said the country “sees through” what Jack Smith, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, and Fulton County DA Fani Willis are doing to Trump in the multiple cases and allegations against him.

“President Trump and counsel are deeply troubled to be learning of these facts approximately 11 months after the charges were filed in this case,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in a filing on Monday. The admissions by Smith’s office “raise questions about the investigation and the handling of evidence that must be addressed before the matter proceeds.”

“Now, Deranged Jack has admitted in a filing in front of Judge Cannon to what I have been saying happened since the Illegal RAID on my home, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida – That he and his team committed blatant Evidence Tampering by mishandling the very Boxes they used as a pretext to bring this Fake Case,” Trump raged on Truth Social last week.

“These deeply Illegal actions by the Politicized ‘Persecutors’ mandate that this whole Witch Hunt be DROPPED IMMEDIATELY. END THE ‘BOXES HOAXES.’ MAGA2024!” he added. “ARREST DERANGED JACK SMITH. HE IS A CRIMINAL!” Trump added in a follow-up post.
