The annual march on Holocaust Remembrance Day was twisted by pro-Palestinian protesters who gathered outside of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp on Monday as Jewish supporters gathered for the ” March of the Living.”

As the solemn walk was held, the protesters, waving Palestinian flags, reportedly heckled the Jewish survivors, according to the Daily Mail.

“Sirens wailed as protestors displayed a banner reading ‘stop genocide’ at groups wearing Israeli flags along the sidelines of the event, which brings together thousands annually to observe Holocaust Remembrance Day in silence,” the Daily Mail reported.

“Eyewitnesses claimed protestors were ‘chanting’ at participants on the march, with Israelis responding with lines from ‘Am Israel chai’, a Jewish solidarity anthem,” the media outlet added.

Survivors of the October 7 attack by Hamas were also in attendance. The group walked two miles from Auschwitz to Birkenau where roughly one million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis in the Second World War.

“An Israeli participant who approached the demonstrators was pushed back by a member of the security detail. ‘I feel immense anger,’” he told Ynet. “‘If we thought never again, we received another blow to the head at Auschwitz with the realization that what was done to Jews on this cursed land, could be repeated especially after October 7. I face them fearless and proud with our national flag,’” Ynet News reported.

“Just last week, distressing footage invoked fury as a man filmed himself walking through the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Auschwitz and saying: ‘You belong here. This is your place of origin. You left these camps and ghettos. Long live Palestine,’” the Daily Mail noted.

“Last week, a man was detained in Poland ‘in connection to’ the hurling of Molotov cocktails at the only Synagogue to have survived the Holocaust, an attack that drew ire from Polish officials and Jewish leaders,” the outlet recounted. “Photos showed the aftermath of the attack on the Nożyk Synagogue.”

Israel is readying an attack on Rafah where the final holdouts of Hamas are likely dug in. On Monday, 100,000 people were told to evacuate the city by Israel, enraging Palestinians and their supporters worldwide.

“We marched today to give a voice to the six million victims of the Nazis’ industrial genocide of the Jewish people. We marched with survivors of the Nazi atrocities as well as survivors of Hamas’ crimes and families of those still held in captivity,” the International March of the Living said in a statement.

“The half a dozen protestors who perversely saw this as an opportunity to voice hatred against Israel and the Jewish people serve as a timely reminder of the importance of Holocaust education and remembrance and of teaching the dangers of hatred and extremism,” the statement continued.

This is the 36th year the event has been held. Thousands typically attend it including Holocaust survivors, Jewish students, leaders, and politicians.

“Fifty-six survivors of the Shoah are expecting to take part in the march alongside an anticipated 10,000 others traveling from across the world to observe the date. This year, Israeli hostages released from captivity in Gaza and families whose relatives are still being held captive will also join the march,” the Daily Mail reported.

Antisemitism is rising across Europe over the Hamas war and pro-Palestinian protesters are demanding a ceasefire while Israel is determined to defeat Hamas.

Israel Katz, the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, called Hamas a “Nazi terrorist organization” on Monday in a post on X marking Holocaust Remembrance Day.

“Israel has agreed to significant concessions to bring the hostages home, but Hamas has repeatedly refused. Everyone understands that [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar has no intention of releasing all hostages, even in exchange for everything,” Katz wrote.

“He believes that the world will pressure Israel to stop the war unconditionally, and he will be able to continue to control Gaza – with hostages as bargaining chips and with the ability to continue the attrition war against Israel and plan the next attack. Today, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, the slogan ‘Never Again’ takes on a special meaning. The people of Israel say: ‘Never again,’” he declared.
