House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has cautioned Joe Biden and the White House against resorting to “election year gimmicks” in their efforts to address the persistent illegal migrant crisis, which Republicans have consistently attributed to the president since the beginning of his term.

Reports suggest that Biden is considering executive action to restrict asylum claims, potentially including a provision to pause new entries after a set number of illegal crossings—a mechanism reminiscent of one in a Senate immigration proposal recently dismissed. Johnson remarked that such a proposal would be “dead on arrival” in the House. Furthermore, the administration is exploring the possibility of tightening screening criteria, as reported by The Daily Wire.

“Americans have lost faith in this president and won’t be fooled by election year gimmicks that don’t secure the border. Nor will they forget that the President created this catastrophe and, until now, has refused to use his executive power to fix it,” Johnson noted in a statement.

Johnson also wasn’t happy about reports suggesting Biden is now considering utilizing Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. a provision that grants the president the authority to bar entry to individuals considered “detrimental” to U.S. interests to “regain operational control of the border.” It comes after the president previously asserted that he had exhausted all available measures to secure the border.

“These reports also underscore just how brazenly and intentionally President Biden misled the public when he claimed he had done everything in his power to secure the border. Specifically, the President’s alleged desire to invoke Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which the White House dismissed using for months, is particularly telling,” Johnson said.

The Daily Wire added:

Johnson sent a letter to Biden in December encouraging the president to consider a number of options under existing law in lieu of an immediate legislative solution after the Senate refused to consider a House-passed border security bill. The list included ending catch-and-release, stopping the “exploitation” of parole authority, reviving asylum cooperation agreements with Mexico, ramping up “expedited” removal of migrants who fail to qualify for asylum, and renewing construction of a border wall. The speaker raised a couple of familiar suggestions on Thursday.

“If these reports are true and the President intends to take action, he can show he’s serious by changing more than asylum policy. He should begin by reinstating the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy and ending his administration’s abuse of the parole system, along with other critical reforms,” Johnson noted.

Johnson came under fire last month from some House conservatives for his lack of commitment to his border stance. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has filed a motion to vacate his chair, though she has yet to make it “privileged” — which means the House would have two days to vote on it. Most Democrats have said they would vote to retain Johnson, which may or may not influence Greene to change her mind.

Also, Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican who is facing headwinds ahead of a primary later this spring, made a startling comment regarding Johnson on Tuesday.

Boebert expressed frustration with what she sees as undue influence on the GOP majority’s agenda by minority Democrats.

“We are passing the Democratic agenda every day that we’re here,” she told reporters. “We have a slim majority in the House, and everything’s being passed overwhelmingly with Democrats’ support, so it makes no difference to me if it’s Hakeem Jeffries as speaker or Mike Johnson right now.”

Jeffries, a New York Democrat, is currently the minority leader. He has said if Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) follows through on her threat to file a privileged motion to vacate the chair, he would back Johnson and would urge Democrats to do the same.

“I want Speaker Mike Johnson to do his absolute best. I like Mike,” Boebert said later Tuesday, per The Washington Post. “It’s just really sad seeing the policies that are coming out. Hopefully, something changes.”
