Even as former President Donald Trump has attacked Bill Barr, that has not stopped his onetime attorney general from supporting the likely GOP presidential nominee.

On Friday, CNN anchor Kaitlin Collins attempted to take the former attorney general to task for his support of his former boss, but Barr was not swayed.

“So it’s not about me. I think that, that I’ve said this all along. If faced with a choice between two people, neither of which I think should be president, I feel it’s my duty to pick the person who I think would do the least damage to the country,” the former attorney general said. “And I think Trump would do less damage than Biden. And I think all this stuff about a threat to democracy, I think the real threat to democracy is the progressive movement and the Biden administration.”

“The Biden administration, or President Biden himself,” the host said.

“Biden’s support for the progressive agenda,” the former attorney general said.

The host was stunned by the answer and pressed the former attorney general about the “threat to democracy.”

“Well, where are we losing our freedoms?” the former attorney general said. “How are our freedoms being constrained? They’re being constrained by, the progressive government and, you know, democracy, especially, you know, from the Anglosphere democracies, the Five Eyes and so forth, the threat’s never been from autocratic government on the right.”

“The threat to freedom and democracy has always been on the left,” he said. “It’s the collectivist, socialist agenda. And that is where we’re losing our freedom. Parents are losing the freedom to control their children’s education. And, you know, people can’t speak their mind without losing their jobs and things like that. This is worse than the McCarthy era. Where is that coming from? It’s not coming from the right.”

The host argued that the former president’s challenges to the 2020 election threatened democracy, but Barr pointed to changes to the way votes were allowed to take place prior to the election as the real threat to democracy.

“Those are the threats to democracy,” he said. “Major changes are being made in our country without the democratic process. And they’re being made by bureaucrats in these agencies.”

As she was unable to corner him, the host’s frustrations became evident, and she changed the subject.

“Okay. Pause! You cannot argue that Republicans across the country are not doing that as well,” she said. “My own hometown, there’s a huge fight at the library over which books kids can read. This is not something that is a single-party fight.”

“Don’t you think there should be some limits on what people are able to read?” the former attorney general said.

Prior to this interview, the former attorney general spoke to Fox News, where he first said he would vote for the Republican ticket.

“I heard you call this hush money case ‘outrageous.’ And I also know you’ve been asked many times—you’ve had your disagreements with the former president,” Bill Hemmer, the host of the Fox News show America’s Newsroom, said to the former attorney general. He’s the presumptive nominee—we assume he will be the nominee. Will you support him in 2024?”

“I’ve said all along given two bad choices, I think it’s my duty to pick the person I think would do the least harm to the country,” the former attorney general said. “And in my mind, I will vote the Republican ticket. I will support the Republican ticket.”

“I think the real danger to the country — the real danger to democracy, as I say — is the progressive agenda,” he said. “Trump may be playing Russian roulette, but a continuation of the Biden administration is national suicide in my opinion.”
