Actor, comedian, philosopher, and all-around-interesting dude Russell Brand has been publicly moving towards professing his faith in Christ for some time now.

This weekend, he’s taking the plunge.

This Sunday, I’m taking the plunge. I’m getting baptized … What’s been explained to me is it’s a chance to die and be reborn. An opportunity to leave the past behind and be reborn in Christ’s name like it says in Galatians, that you can live as an enlightened and awakened person.

If you would have told me in 2010 that Russell Brand, the MTV druggie married to Katy Perry, would be out here quoting Galatians (not sure if he meant Galatians 3:27 or what) and discussing his upcoming baptism, I would have thought you were crazy.

Then again, God has a way of inverting our own orders and hierarchies so that we may be reminded of His own.

Still it’s easy to be skeptical of celebrity converts. I mean, look at Kanye, right?

But here Brand addressed some of those concerns.

I know a lot of people are cynical about the increasing interest in Christianity and the return to God. But to me it’s obvious, as meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there’s this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we’ve all known all of our lives within us and around us.

My man Russell channeling his inner Apostle Paul!

From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live. He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said, โ€˜For we are also his offspring.’

I feel encouraged by this. I can’t judge his heart, only God can, but this is a good thing.

We can quibble over what baptism is and his use of the word “enlightenment,” but I’m praying for him to grow in understanding and obedience.

Pray for Russell, ladies and gents!
