Reggie Bush is having his Heisman Trophy returned to him

Reggie Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner who had the award stripped away after it was discovered he took money to play, is finally having his trophy restored to him.

Let me sum up the story this way. Reggie took money to play, he broke the rules AND got caught. Everyone knows that everyone broke the rules back then, but most weren’t caught.

Now, in 2024, it’s legal to pay players, so by today’s rules Reggie is cool.

AND, most importantly, fellow USC Heisman winner OJ Simpson died.

Why does that matter? Well, when OJ died, the Heisman Trophy posted their condolences:

Everybody piled on and said, “Hey, how come a murderer like OJ got to keep his trophy and Reggie doesn’t?”

So, now the Heisman folks are inviting Reggie back into the fold.

“Personally, I’m thrilled to reunite with my fellow Heisman winners and be a part of the storied legacy of the Heisman Trophy, and I’m honored to return to the Heisman family,” Bush said in a statement to ESPN. “I also look forward to working together with the Heisman Trust to advance the values and mission of the organization … “

“We are thrilled to welcome Reggie Bush back to the Heisman family in recognition of his collegiate accomplishments,” said Michael Comerford, president of The Heisman Trophy Trust. “We considered the enormous changes in college athletics over the last several years in deciding that now is the right time to reinstate the trophy for Reggie. We are so happy to welcome him back.”

I mean, I get it. He cheated. But, like I said, his sin was getting caught. And the Heisman Trophy Trust has forgiven him.

I mean, the dude was a monster! He earned that trophy.
