Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser attended the Masters golf tournament with taxpayers footing the bill for the trip to the prestigious sporting event.

The Democrat leader reportedly traveled to Augusta, Georgia for the annual event which is one of professional golf’s showcase tourneys to promote “sports and economic development” at a time when the streets of her crime-ridden city are less safe than a third-world warzone.

According to her public schedule: “Mayor Bowser will travel to Augusta, Georgia, as part of a sports and economic development visit.”

Bowser’s Communications Director Susana Castillo confirmed to a local news outlet that her boss had flown south for the ritzy tourney and that travel expenses were on the taxpayer dime.

When asked how the mayor paid for her visit to Georgia on Saturday, Castillo said that “city funds were used for flights but did not specify the cost and that we would have to file a Freedom of Information Act request to find an answer,” DC News Now reported.

The mayor’s spox confirmed to the outlet that Bowser attended the Masters and was invited by two people heading a new D.C. city task force “to revitalize the Gallery Place and Chinatown neighborhood.”

“We’ve been successful in creating new and dynamic neighborhoods across DC by putting old spaces to new uses,” Bowser said in a January statement. “We’ve done this before – at Union Market, at Navy Yard, at the Wharf, at City Center. This Task Force will make it happen again. And we want to hear from the community. If you have an idea for the future of Gallery Place/Chinatown or any part of Downtown DC, share it with us at BeDowntown.dc.gov.”

When asked why Bowser needed to travel nearly 500 miles south from her home city, Castillo told DC News Now that “whether it’s here in the city or another city or another country,” Bowser is willing to “advance administrative interests no matter the setting.”

Bowser’s attending the Masters is a sign that the controversy surrounding the event, which has been accused of having a racist name, has died down.

The Democrat mayor famously ordered the words “BLACK LIVES MATTER” to be painted in gigantic yellow letters on a street in front of the White House when then-President Donald J. Trump was in office in 2020 during the George Floyd race riots.

Bowser returned home to host the DC Emancipation Day Parade on Sunday, according to her schedule.

Former D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray told DC News Now that he saw “no controversy” in Bowser attending the Masters.

“As mayor, I frequently attended meetings and events to foster economic development, strengthen partnerships, and build rapport with people interested in investing in our city. I met with people in countless venues, be they overseas, in downtown DC conference rooms, or sometimes at high-profile gatherings. I see no controversy in travel that is intended to promote the District in furtherance of opportunity that benefits residents and local businesses,” the former mayor, who is currently a member of the city council, said in a statement, according to the outlet.
