Remember that case with the Ohio women propping up a dead guy to make a bank withdrawal?

Well, it happened again.

Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes, a woman in Bangu in the western region of Rio de Janeiro, wheeled a corpse into a bank and tried to take out a loan in his name.

Video from the bank shows Nunes propping Paulo Roberto Braga’s head up, and she’s holding on to his hand to sign the documents. Nunes claims to be Braga’s niece and caregiver.

“Uncle, are you listening? You need to sign,” Nunes says. “If you don’t sign it, there’s no way. I can’t sign for you.”

The bank officials were suspicious of the woman’s actions and called the police and emergency medical services.

The Mobile Emergency Assistance Service (Samu) arrived and proclaimed Braga dead, and they said he had been dead for several hours. Police then arrested Nunes for attempted theft by fraud and vilification of a corpse.

Nunes insisted they were incorrect, and Bragas was very much alive.

A bank employee can also be heard saying that the man appears to be unwell and looks very pale. “But that’s just how he is,” the woman replies.

Nunes’s lawyer Ana Carla de Souza Correa confirmed that this will be their defense in court.

Senhor Paulo was alive in the bank building. There is evidence of that. When the time is right, it will be disclosed. It’s a misunderstanding and everything will be clarified after the court proceedings are complete, and we have proven the innocence of Senhora Erika.

Currently, the body is being autopsied to determine the cause of death, and foul play has not been ruled out.
