Washington, D.C. – Today the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, legislation that ensures colleges connect pregnant students with information about available resources to support their higher education journey while pregnant and parenting passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce. The bill now waits for a vote to be scheduled on the House floor.

The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act would require that life-affirming information be emailed to all enrolled students at the beginning of the academic year. The information also must be accessible through available student handbooks, at orientation, and online.

The national pro-life group SBA Pro-Life America celebrated in a statement:

“Women on college campuses across the country should not feel the burden of choosing between continuing their education or raising their child,” said the Honorable Marilyn Musgrave, SBA Pro-Life America’s vice president of government affairs. “We are grateful to the committee for prioritizing student moms and passing The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, and to Chairwoman Virginia Foxx and Representatives Ashley Hinson and Mary Miller for this important legislation that supports mothers on campuses across America. We urge the House to swiftly consider and pass this commonsense legislation.”

E.V. Osment Vice President of Communications for SBA Pro-Life America, added:

“Women should never feel pressured to abort their child for fear that they will not have the support they need to pursue higher education. I know this firsthand. I was not aware of resources available to me when I had my unplanned pregnancy in college. As a result, I dropped out until after my child was born. We should all agree that pregnant students deserve better connections to resources available. And we should be a country that empowers mothers on campus and supports them with resources and information. The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act ensures universities provide students with information on life-affirming resources that will serve both mom and baby.”

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is a network of more than one million pro-life Americans nationwide, dedicated to ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for laws that save lives, with a special calling to promote pro-life women leaders.
