Florida Governor Ron DeSantis challenged the leftist media to report California fires as if the state had a Republican governor.
So far, the wildfires have killed ten people, possibly more, scorched over 35,000 thousand acres of land, and destroyed nearly 10,000 structures, including people’s homes. Over 180,000 residents in California have also been displaced, while another 153,000 are under evacuation orders.
Meanwhile, the Leftist media continues to overlook critical failures that contributed to the start and spread of the blaze, as well as continue to hamper efforts to contain it due to the state being a Democratic stronghold.
Speaking at Trump’s residence of Mar-a-Lago, Gov. DeSantis highlighted the mainstream media’s reluctance to call out California Governor Gavin Newsom for the poor response.
The Florida governor was responding to a journalist’s question asking if Trump’s remarks blaming California Democrats for the tragedy were appropriate.
“Is it appropriate for people in your industry to try to create division and to try to create narratives any time these things happen?” Gov. DeSantis lashed back.
“If Newsom was a Republican, you guys would … have him nailed to the wall for what they’re doing over there.”
Another reporter asked him if he agreed with Trump’s remarks calling for the resignation of the California governor.
“Trump said Newsom should resign and that the wildfires are all his fault. So do you agree with those comments?”
He reminded them how they found every reason to blame him for the 12-story Surfside beachfront condominium collapse that killed 98 people.
The unplanned demolition stemmed from longtime degradation, water penetration, and corrosion of the building’s steel reinforcements.
However, the mainstream media blamed it squarely on DeSantis despite local governments being responsible for enforcing building standards and conducting inspections.
“I remember when we had the Surfside Tower collapse. I had people from The Washington Post trying to blame me for it immediately without having any facts or any of it.”
He also noted that the media overlooked Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s absence during the early hours of the blaze when most critical decisions were required.
“It’s not the same that mayor of LA if that were a Republican mayor, I can only imagine what that would do. I mean, you know, the fires are at high risk and you try to go to Africa or wherever she wants to go on some type of voyage.”
Unlike Karen, DeSantis spent time at the scene of the Surfside collapse, comforting the victims’ families. In contrast, Bass refused to answer journalists’ questions or even assure the affected families of the city’s support.
“Madam mayor, have you absolutely nothing to say to the citizens today who are dealing with this disaster?” David Blevins asked the snobbish mayor.
Unsurprisingly, the Leftist media remained silent on Mayor Bass’s taxpayer-funded African tour, highlighting the extent of their double standards.
In 2021, the media slammed Texas Senator Ted Cruz for traveling just across the border to Cancun, Mexico, during the snowstorm that left millions without electricity. The media accused Cruz of lacking empathy and leaving the state when major policy decisions were required.
However, Mayor Bass, who has executive powers and is expected to lead the emergency response in Los Angeles, has not received similar criticism.
“And so, you know, I just I’d like to see some balance on how this is done. You can criticize the president-elect, but I think you also have to hold these other people accountable. And I have not seen that,” he noted.
