Thousands of physicians on Thursday urged the Senate not to confirm Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as President-elect Donald Trump’s next Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, warning that his history makes him a dangerous choice.

The warning comes after a coalition of House Democrats, who were all doctors, also opposed his nomination in a press briefing Wednesday. If Kennedy is confirmed, the group would create a new caucus to elevate their voices.

Kennedy is considered controversial because of his previous anti-vaccine rhetoric. He has since said that he would not eliminate any vaccines, but hopes to provide more transparency on vaccines so Americans can make more informed health decisions.

The group of physicians wrote in a letter to the Senate that they were “appalled” by Trump’s “reckless” nomination of Kennedy to the post and that he would be “dangerous” if confirmed.

“This appointment is an affront to the principles of public health, the tireless dedication of medical professionals, and the trust that millions of Americans place in the health care system,” the letter reads. “RFK Jr. Has a well-documented history of spreading dangerous disinformation on vaccines and public health interventions, leaving vulnerable communities unprotected and placing millions of lives at risk. His appointment is a direct threat to the safety of our patients and the public at large.”

The letter comes as many Republican senators appear to ready to embrace Kennedy to the post, despite a lack of medical training. Kennedy, the nephew of the late President John F. Kennedy, has primarily worked as an environmental lawyer.

The letter is also part of the Committee to Protect Health Care’s larger operation to stop Kennedy’s confirmation, by urging health officials to voice their opposition to the nomination to the Senate, per The Hill.
