President-elect Donald Trump had harsh words for the wind industry at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, saying he would try to enact policies stopping the building of wind farms.
“They litter our country,” he said. “They’re littered all over our country like dropping paper, like dropping garbage in a field. And that’s what happens to them, because in a period of time, they turn to garbage, most expensive energy ever. They only work if you get subsidy.”
Trump also said wind farm developers are “getting rich” off the projects as a direct result of the government subsidies the projects receive.
“It’s the most expensive energy there is. It’s many, many times more expensive than clean, natural gas. So we’re going to try and have a policy where no windmills are being built,” Trump said.
Trump also stated that offshore wind projects are “driving the whales crazy” and expressed surprise that environmentalists are supportive of the wind industry.
