Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg made headlines this week by announcing a renewed commitment to free speech and steps being taken to overhaul content restrictions and censorship on Facebook and Instagram. πŸ‘‡

One of the major changes Zuckerberg mentioned was the decision to stop using third-party “fact-checkers” to police content. Not surprisingly, the fact-checkers β€” namely the UK-based Full Fact, the internet’s self-professed “first responders” β€” were not pleased.

‘Meta’s decision to end its partnership with fact checkers in the US is disappointing and a backwards step that risks a chilling effect around the world,’ protested Full Fact CEO Chris Morris.

Upon closer inspection, Full Fact’s interest in the situation may go beyond an altruistic crusade for truth:

Full Fact has been a partner in Facebook’s Third Party Fact Checking Programme since 2019 and received Β£373,510 – or around $466,000 – from the company in 2023 alone.

According to Full Fact’s funding page, the company received more than Β£2.5 million ($3.1 million) from Facebook between 2019 and 2023.

Zuckerberg stated that Meta’s platforms would leave fact-checkers behind in favor of a Community Notes-style system, similar to that of X.

What will Facebook do without fact checks like this???

How will our grandmothers know that “car-sized” drones over Vegas aren’t the vanguard of an alien attack??

Despite losing their meal ticket, the fact-checkers at Full Fact should be able to land on their feet. We hear Bluesky is always on the lookout for help suppressing the truth.
