Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick responded to the firing of New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo after just one season.

Mayo and the Patriots went 4-13, but won their final regular season game against the Buffalo Bills. Most of the time, you want to end the season on a high note – but this win cost New England the number one pick in next year’s draft.

Mayo was fired immediately after the game.

“After the game I informed Jerod Mayo that he will not be returning as the head coach of the New England Patriots in 2025. For me, personally, it was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made,” owner Robert Kraft said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the trajectory of our team’s performances throughout the season did not ascend as I had hoped.”

Either that or Mayo was told – or strongly advised – to tank for the top pick and didn’t.

Bill Belichick Responds To Patriots Situation

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, the man with eight Super Bowl rings opted not to say much about the New England debacle.

“The Patriots’ situation, honestly, I don’t have too much of a comment on that,” Belichick said, in a classic Belichickian non-answer. “Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, Robyn Glaser, they’re the decision-makers there.”

He did offer a little bit of a jab by referring to Mayo as his “hand-picked” replacement.

“Mayo was hand-picked by Robert, but in the end, the decision-making is something they’d have to comment on,” Belichick said, “I really don’t know from the outside looking in. They haven’t called me and asked, so I don’t know.”

Hired By North Carolina

After leaving New England, it’s safe to say that Bill Belichick has been living his best life.

Whether it’s his foray into “Instaface,” his dating life with a 24-year-old, or even sliding into a cheerleading feud, the man is a constant source of awesome.

Now, though, it’s time for him to buckle down again.

Belichick was recently hired as the head football coach at the University of North Carolina, marking his first venture into college football. He signed a five-year deal with UNC.

His hiring was a shock to many, given his lack of college coaching experience, but he has ties to the university through his father, Steve Belichick, who was an assistant coach there in the 1950s.

The move to North Carolina wasn’t nearly as shocking as learning that he was able to score with a cheerleader almost half a century younger than him.
