Today was a historic day.

Vice President Kamala Harris became the first woman to certify her own loss in a presidential election in U.S. history. In an extremely satisfying moment, House Republicans drowned her out with applause as she announced Trump as the victor, and ended up having to slam down the gavel to name herself as the loser.

Without any drama or conflict, Harris, in her role as President of the Senate, certified that Donald Trump received 312 electoral college votes, officially declaring him winner of the 2024 presidential election.

Each state’s electoral college votes were announced in alphabetical order, beginning with Alabama. Despite the strong emotions that many still harbor related to the election, the certification followed protocol and was completed without protest.

Today also marks four years since the “insurrection” on January 6th, 2021. I use the term “insurrection” sarcastically.

Before the storming of the capitol, President Donald Trump asked Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to certify the electoral votes declaring Joe Biden the victor.

Pence refused the President’s request, citing his duty to the Constitution and his lack of constitutional authority to change the outcome of the election.

Pence took to X to commend the 2024 certification process.

For those keeping track, there are only 14 more days left until President Trump’s inauguration.
