The recent spending bill fight set the stage for a potential new battle in Congress as the president-elect’s administration sought to strip the opposition of its “last tool” against the “America First agenda.”

While constituent uproar and social media leverage managed to get a more than 1,500-page omnibus bill trimmed down to a fraction of the size, President-elect Donald Trump didn’t see one key ask included. Sunday, White House press secretary designee Karoline Leavitt spoke to recently expressed desires to do away with the debt ceiling and why the incoming administration considered it a “fantastic idea.”

Joining Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures,” the spokesperson responded to a question on whether attempts to eliminate or raise the debt ceiling could be a “spoiler” for Republicans in the 119th Congress.

“Well, it shouldn’t be, because it’s a fantastic idea, and President Trump is in full support of it, as he has expressed in recent days,” said Leavitt.

“The continuing resolution that passed happened because of President Trump. It includes critical aid for our farmers, critical aid, and disaster relief for our fellow Americans who were impacted by Hurricane Helene. But as soon as Republicans return to the Hill in January, they have to deal with the debt ceiling. This is the last tool in Senator Schumer and the Democrats’ toolbox to try to obstruct President Trump’s America First agenda,” she argued.

“The American people re-elected President Trump with a resounding mandate because they want him to take monumental action to secure the southern border, to expedite permitting, to unleash the might of our American energy industry, and to restore peace through strength abroad,” she went on. “We can only do that if we get rid of the debt ceiling. President Trump is in strong support of that and Republicans need to get behind it.”

Before the successful iteration of the resolution passed the Senate, it was reported that its passage in the House had left Trump “NOT happy” because he had wanted to see the debt ceiling issue resolved under President Joe Biden’s watch in part to better facilitate plans for tax cuts.

The president-elect went so far as to suggest in a statement to Fox News Digital, “Anybody that supports a bill that doesn’t take care of the Democrat quicksand known as the debt ceiling should be primaried and disposed of as quickly as possible.”

A number of lawmakers echoed the sentiment, including Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn who posted amid the legislative fight, “I agree with @realDonaldTrump — if we take the debt ceiling off the table now, it’ll make it easier to MAGA once he takes office. The debt ceiling is Schumer’s only leverage to stop President Trump from implementing his America First agenda. President Trump is right to look at ways to rein in our country’s out-of-control spending, which only got worse under Biden.”
