The price of eggs has skyrocketed with experts saying that it’s the result of the bird flu that has impacted hens.
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom earlier this week declared a state of emergency over the bird flu, in order to streamline the state’s response to the virus.
The bird flu has spread to dairy cattle in 16 states so far, including Texas and Kansas, where the outbreak was first detected in March of 2024.
Prices of eggs in California have increased to $8.85 per dozen, according to a report from Reuters.
Data shows that about 35 million hens have been killed by the bird flu this year.
Egg prices in the Midwest are about $5.57 per dozen which is 150% up from a year ago.
