In the days leading up to December 7th, 1941, plenty of the United States military leadership, especially those in the Pacific, knew that at some point we would find ourselves at war with the Empire of Japan. Japan had already invaded China, made a puppet state out of Manchuria that they called Manchukuo, and were gearing up for naval warfare in the world’s largest theater of operations, the Pacific Ocean. That war began with the attack on Pearl Harbor, an attack intended to cripple the U.S. Pacific Fleet and bring the U.S. to the negotiating table – or to force our withdrawal to the West Coast.

That attack, we must note, was an attack by a major military power on a military base (well, for the most part) and was within the usual expectations of warfare. But today, we face another possible adversary in the Pacific, another nation with designs on its neighbors, and a nation that has thousands of its people within our borders, many illegally. On Thursday, Fox Business released a video of host Maria Bartiromo speaking with China expert Gordon Chang on China, the mysterious drones appearing over many of our military sites, and a lot more. In summary: Mr. Chang raised several key points explaining why he thinks China intends to hit us, one way or another.
On the topic of the mystery drones over some of our East Coast cities and our military bases around the country, Gordon Chang states:
It certainly is Communist China for many of these drones, maybe even a majority of them. You know, the increased tempo of these drone flights against our military bases is occurring at the same time as there is an increase of incursions and attempted incursions by Chinese and other nationals. Really what is occurring here is that they are preparing to attack the United States from American soil. I don’t know why we need an engraved invitation from Beijing. It’s clear what is going to happen. We are going to get hit and we are not taking the necessary precautions to protect these bases and to protect the American people.

When Mr. Chang mentions “Chinese and other nationals,” it’s important to remember that this is a direct consequence of the Biden administration’s non-enforcement of the borders; we have essentially laid out a red carpet for invaders not only from China but from every other unfriendly country on the planet. Now there are millions of these people within our borders, and we have very little idea who they are, where they are, or what they are doing.

There is a lot of such activity going on right now. Chinese nationals are popping up near our military bases; Chinese interests are buying up farmland suspiciously close to some of these same bases, and now we have these drone overflights, which the Biden administration is reassuring us are nothing to worry about.
Now, will the incoming Trump administration make a difference? Maybe – for a while.

In the interview, Maria Bartiromo asked Mr. Chang about our readiness:
MARIA: There’s also, I mean, a weakened situation to admit, I mean, you know, for the longest time General Jack Keane has been telling us on this program repeatedly for years, that we are outgunned, that we are outmanned, when you look at our navy vs. the Chinese navy, the Pentagon released its 2024 China military power report yesterday. It found that Beijing is increasing its military pressure on Taiwan, its ramping up its aggression in the South China Sea, its deepening its ties with Russia, and its crackdown on military corruption may have disrupted progress towards its 2027 modernization goal. China is also growing its nuclear arsenal, adding at least 100 nuclear warheads to the stockpile over the last year, with 600 plus already in the arsenal. That number could grow to over a thousand by 2030, Gordon. And yet there’s no response ever from the Biden-Harris administration to Beijing’s behavior. I mean, we allowed the spy balloon to traverse the country for a week before shooting it down, why aren’t they shooting down these drones in the air if they suspect they’re from China?
GORDON CHANG: There’s no good answer. You have base commanders who, first of all, don’t have the authority, and they don’t have the equipment to shoot down these drones. And the Chinese are noticing this, which means they see a big vulnerability.

China isn’t the only one seeing a big vulnerability. Sure, the incoming Trump administration can make a significant difference in our military posture. Just eliminating the DEI horse squeeze and restoring the armed services to their primary purpose, closing with and destroying the enemy by fire, maneuver, and shock effect, will make a big difference. But restoring our Navy means building ships, and not just cargo hulls but high-tech modern warships – and that’s not something that can be done in four years.
Here’s the problem: China is not a land of great ideas, but it is a land of great momentum. They measure their history not in hundreds of years but in thousands; here in the New World, we have a hard time understanding the Asian take on the scope of history. And, likely, China’s leadership, civil and military (there’s damn little difference between the two) may well view Trump’s second term as only a temporary setback; sooner or later, they may well presume that another weaksauce Democrat will come in and proceed back to hamstringing our military and ruining our economy.
They may well be right. And that, from their point of view, may well be the time to strike. Just what form that strike takes remains to be seen, but the number of Chinese nationals in the country illegally would seem a good indicator that it won’t be a Pearl Harbor event, with one major military force attacking another; it will instead be decentralized, carried out by independent cells, and aimed at our economy and infrastructure. These are attacks that we are ill-equipped to counter. This is likely to be the “hit” Gordon Chang is warning us of.

China has to know this. China, we can bet, does know this. The only question is if Chinese access to America’s consumer markets will outweigh the Chinese Communist Party’s imperialist ambitions.
