Since we’re now deep into the NFL season, perhaps we can indulge some football analogies, and assert that Donald Trump is the Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen of American politics. Just when you think he’s in deep trouble he scrambles out of the lawfare pocket and delivers a strike down the field for yet another win.

Today’s win comes from Georgia, where Fulton County prosecutor Fani Willis got her fanny handed to her by a Georgia Court of Appeals, which has removed her from her case against Trump. The AP reports:

Citing “the appearance of impropriety” by Willis that might not typically warrant such a removal, the court said in a 2-1 ruling that “this is the rare case in which disqualification is mandated and no other remedy will suffice to restore public confidence in the integrity of these proceedings.”

It’s the latest legal victory for Trump as he prepares for a return to power in a second term, further underscoring how criminal cases that just one year ago threatened to impede Trump’s political career and put him in personal jeopardy have now tilted in his favor.

The case could continue under another prosecutor, but my guess is it will linger for a few months and then be dismissed.

Meanwhile, Trump has his enemies forming still more circular firing squads. The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump’s libel suit settlement with ABC News has touched off mayhem (“internal backlash”) within ABC News. George Stepalloverus (Snuffigufulus?) is upset! But this detail jumps out in particlar:

Disney’s legal team was concerned that given the current makeup of the Supreme Court, appealing a negative district court ruling could have jeopardized the landmark New York Times v. Sullivan ruling that protects the media in defamation cases.

I wondered in yesterday’s podcast whether this might have been a factor in ABC’s decision, but our legal supremo John Yoo—who was having a very bad day on our latest episode—thought not. Score one for the amateurs!
