Congressman Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., said Congress needs to start passing single issue spending bills to achieve fiscal responsibility. 

“The answer lies in good old Tennessee,” Burchett said on the Monday edition of the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show. “When I was in the legislature, you passed single issue spending bills … if it’s about a bill dealing with traffic jams you can’t put a pay raise in there for congressmen or vice versa.”

He explained that in Washington, the rules can just be suspended at any point and there are often 3,000-page spending bills to be voted on.

“It just goes to show you … you don’t want to be held accountable up here,” Burchett said. “That’s the worst thing that can happen.”

He added that single issue spending bills would be the best thing for the American people. 

“We’ve got to make tough cuts,” Burchett said. “We’ve got to disassemble these alphabet agencies, the Department of Education. Send that money to the states. Let the states decide what to do with it.”

Congress has until Dec. 20 to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open until March.
