Justin Ishbia, brother of Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Mat Ishbia, is pursuing ownership of the Minnesota Twins, according to The Athletic.

A report surfaced Friday that Justin Ishbia is leading efforts to purchase the Twins from the Pohlad family, who have owned and operated the franchise since 1984.

Justin Ishbia, who has an estimated net worth of $5.4 billion, currently serves as the second-largest stakeholder in the Suns and Mercury organizations, where he holds the title of alternative governor. His brother Mat purchased these franchises from Robert Sarver for $4 billion in a transaction approved by the NBA Board of Governors in 2023.

Beyond his sports involvement, Justin Ishbia serves as managing partner of Shore Capital Partners, an equity firm he founded in Chicago. He also holds positions on the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry Board. Additionally, he maintains a 22% ownership stake in United Wholesale Mortgage, a company primarily owned by his brother Mat.

The Pohlad family, who began exploring a sale of the Twins this year, recently made several front office changes under the direction of controlling owner Jim Pohlad and club executive chair Joe Pohlad. One significant move includes the promotion of Derek Falvey, currently president of baseball operations, to team president effective next month.

According to The Athletic, the Ishbias have met with “local leaders,” though it remains unclear whether team officials have been involved in these discussions. During the MLB Winter Meetings this week, Falvey characterized the sale process as being in “Phase One,” suggesting it could extend several months.
