President-elect Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may have appeared chummy during their latest meet-up in Florida but recent comments have some wondering.
After a reported joke by the incoming president when he suggested Canada could become part of the U.S. and Trudeau named its governor, Trump posted a snarky jab on Truth Social as Trudeau seemed to take a swipe at the U.S. that earned a scathing comeback from billionaire Elon Musk.
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” the president-elect wrote. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!”
Hours later, the Canadian PM seemed to take a shot at Americans who chose Trump over a female candidate, suggesting it was a setback for women’s progress.
“We were supposed to be on a steady, if difficult, march towards progress. And yet, just a few weeks ago, the United States voted for a second time to not elect its first woman president,” Trudeau said, not mentioning Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris by name.

“Women’s rights and women’s progress is under attack – overtly and subtly. I want you to know that I am, and always will be, a proud feminist. You will always have an ally in me, and in my government,” Trudeau added while speaking to an “Ottawa gala for Equal Voice, an organization that works to get more women elected to public office,” according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
According to the CBC report:
The comments could be interpreted as a thinly veiled swipe at U.S. president-elect Donald Trump. In his first term, Trump appointed Supreme Court justices who were intent on overturning abortion jurisprudence — something they ultimately did with the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health decision.
Harris’s loss in the November election frustrated the hopes of Americans who wanted to see a woman in the Oval Office for the first time.
Trudeau’s comments got the attention of Musk, who once shared a tweet likening the Canadian leader to Hitler.
“He’s such an insufferable tool. Won’t be in power for much longer,” wrote the Tesla and Space X CEO tapped by Trump to co-lead a “department of government efficiency.”
