A former bodyguard of O.J. Simpson, the football superstar who died earlier this year at the age of 76, is claiming that the disgraced Simpson confessed to the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in a bombshell recording.
And in yet another twist, police are reportedly disputing the authenticity of the recording.
Former Bodyguard Claims Simpson Confessed
A search warrant obtained by TMZ shows that Minnesota police officers seized “multiple thumb drives” from the home of Simpson’s former bodyguard Iroc Avelli. Police in Bloomington arrested Avelli in 2022. They then carried out a search warrant on his home to collect evidence. This included a green backpack with the hard drives inside.
In June of 2024, two months after Simpson passed away, officers in Minnesota received a call from an LAPD detective who told them that Avelli and his attorney were claiming that the thumb drive they confiscated contained a recording of Simpson confessing to the murders.
However, Bloomington Police are alleging that when they listened to the thumb drive, there was no confession from Simpson. Instead, it was just Avelli talking to himself.
“The City of Bloomington, Minnesota Police Department examined the drives in question and determined they contained nothing of evidentiary value,” the LAPD said in a statement. “The LAPD has never listened to, or been in possession of, these drives.”
The thumb drive is currently tied up in litigation. Indeed, Avelli is suing Minnesota police in the hopes of getting it back. In July, a judge ruled to deny Avelli’s motion.

Simpson’s History
Simpson was one of the most popular NFL stars in the world, and eventually even Hollywood before his ex-wife Brown Simpson and her friend Goldman were brutally stabbed to death in 1994. Many are still convinced that Simpson committed this heinous crime. That’s why the world was shocked when Simpson was acquitted the next year after a sensational televised trial that was dubbed the “Trial of the Century,” with millions of people watching it every day.
It should be noted that in 1997, Simpson lost a civil wrongful death suit. A $33.5 million judgement was subsequently sent down against him.
Simpson later served nine years in prison for armed robbery. In the summer of 2007, Simpson allegedly broke into a Las Vegas hotel room with five other men to steal various pieces of memorabilia that he claimed belonged to him.
One of the dealers who was robbed in this incident testified in court that Simpson burst into the room and screamed, “This all belongs to me. You stole this from me.”
Simpson was released from prison in October of 2017.
“I’ve basically spent a conflict-free life, you know,” he said after his release.
Simpson’s Death
Simpson died in April after a battle with cancer.
“On April 10th, our father, Orenthal Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer,” Simpson’s family said at the time. “He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
Many still believe that Simpson got away with the murders of Brown Simpson and Goldman. If there really was a confession on those thumb drives, we can only hope that the police would release it, as it would bring closure to millions of people.
