Facing the prospect of not only irrelevancy, which some would argue was already a given but perhaps even cancellation, the “Morning Joe” duo of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski can suddenly read the writing on the wall.
The shamelessly anti-Trump MSNBC hosts revealed a rather stunning development on Monday’s show in the wake of Trump’s decisive win over Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, telling what few viewers they may have that they traveled to Florida to “meet personally” with President-elect Donald Trump.
The “cheerful and upbeat” meeting took place on Friday as Scarborough and Brzezinski endeavored to “restart communications” with Trump while talking about a “new approach” in coverage of his incoming administration.
“Joe and I went to Mar-a-Lago to meet personally with President-elect Trump. It was the first time we have seen him in seven years,” Brzezinski said, after noting that they had heard from so many people, including political leaders, who were “dismayed” and scared” over some of Trump’s cabinet selections.

“We talked about a lot of issues, including abortion, mass deportation, threats of political retribution against political opponents and media outlets,” Scarborough chimed in. “We talked about that a good bit.”
“It’s going to come as no surprise to anybody who watches this show — has watched it over the past year or over the past decade, that we didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues and we told him so,” he added.
“What we did agree on was to restart communications,” Brzezinski proclaimed. “My father often spoke with world leaders with whom he and the United States profoundly disagreed. That is a task shared by reporters and commentators alike. We had not spoken to Trump since March of 2020, other than a personal call that Joe made after the attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania.”
Her message to critics of the move was, “Why wouldn’t we? Five years of political warfare has deeply divided Washington and the country.”
Warfare that the Morning Joe show willfully perpetuated while suggesting Trump was the reincarnation of Hitler himself.
“Joe and I realized it’s time to do something different and that starts with not only talking about Donald Trump but also talking with him,” Brzezinski explained.
It’s not clear if this is more of a Godfather-like move to keep your enemies close or a transparent ploy to kiss the ring in hopes of staving off presumed scrutiny from a potential Matt Gaetz-led Department of Justice.
“Somebody close to Donald Trump told me this past weekend, this is a president who is not seeking re-election, so maybe, just maybe now could be time for both parties to get to work,” Scarborough added. “I don’t know. It seems to make sense for leaders of both parties to seek common ground, if it’s possible at all.”
“I will tell you a lot of Democratic leaders we have talked to this past week since the election have told Mika and me, it’s time for a new approach,” he continued. “When I say top Democrats, I mean top Democrats they said we are open – this is before we talked to Donald Trump – they said, ‘Listen, we are open to working with the incoming president if the incoming president is open to working with us.’”
The bottom line here is that there has been a culture shift in America since Trump’s victory on Nov. 5, as seen over the weekend in numerous NFL games where players did the Trump dance — think Y.M.C.A. — to celebrate scoring.
Politics is downstream of culture
Trump was a cultural figure before he became a political one, and now as a political figure he’s influencing culture upstream … https://t.co/KA8dpmNSTS
