Sometimes I think the mainstream media has taken up writing droll satire. Like this headline in The Hill:
Schools, colleges brace for ‘a much more threatening political environment’
Educators and university leaders are on the edge of their seats as President-elect Trump makes his return to office with an aggressive posture toward K-12 and higher education.
Trump has threatened multiple times to take away funding from schools if they do not align with his views on subjects such as diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and transgender rights.
That threat has left institutions holding their breath as they try to prepare with how to deal the hostility they could face for the next four years.
Gee—you think institutions that have clearly taken a partisan stance might have to worry about some political blowback at some point? Let’s recall once again that at the Ivy League colleges, 95 percent (or more) of campaign contributions go to Democrats, and the proportion of Republicans on the faculty is usually below 10 percent or less. (In some academic departments it is routinely zero percent.)
There’s a good case that universities this politically lopsided should have their tax exempt status stripped entirely.
Meanwhile, The Hill includes this survey of readers:
Notice anything odd about this survey? Yeah—it doesn’t include the option, “Do you think the Department of Education should be abolished?” I’d be tempted to check the first option here (“Very concerned” about the future of the Dept. of Education) because I am very concerned that it won’t be abolished.
