The lost and found at the bustling Newport railway station in Wales doesn’t hold onto ketamine, as drug dealer Jordan McCourt-Knight found out the hard way.
McCourt-Knight was working in coordination with a large drug ring in Shropshire when he left behind as much as $50,000 worth of illicit drugs on the train back in 2019.
He immediately noticed his mistake and tried to return to retrieve the misplaced drugs, but the train was already departing, so he did what any sane person would do after leaving something valuable on the train: He reported it to the station staff.
Only that’s a little less sane when the valuables you leave behind are illegal drugs.
Staff on the train had already found the bag and reported it to the police, who were only too happy to follow up with McCourt-Knight who made their job extremely easy.
Shortly afterward, the drug dealer was arrested and found to be carrying a small stash of class A and class C drugs on his person, along with multiple cell phones and a large amount of cash.
After nearly 5 years of investigation, McCourt-Knight has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, and two other drug dealers that he was working with have also been convicted as a result of his blunder.
One investigator on the case, DS Dan Murdoch, remarked that,
Through one careless mistake, McCourt-Knight singlehandedly helped bring down the drugs ring, unwittingly aiding detectives in unravelling the entire enterprise.
