Whoopi Goldberg recently celebrated her 69th birthday on “The View,” taking advantage of the occasion to accuse a Staten Island bakery of refusing to serve her due to her political ideology, a claim that the bakery’s owner has since denied.
The alleged incident was discussed on Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” in which the program’s co-hosts were celebrating Goldberg’s birthday by sharing some Charlotte Russe desserts. While they participated in the festivities, Goldberg criticized the bakery without naming it directly.
“Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me,” Goldberg claimed, adding that the bakery rejected her order because “they did not like my [Goldberg’s] politics.”
“They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff,” she continued, rolling her eyes. “But folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”
Soon after, Jill Holtermann, the owner of Holtermann’s Bakery, a popular 145-year-old family-owned staple of the community, came out and denied Goldberg’s claim, maintaining that the bakery was facing problems with their boilers at the time and that it had nothing to do with Goldberg’s politics.
“I said to Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,’” she stated. “‘We have so many things going on with my boiler,’ because the building is from 1930, so, when she called me, I had no idea [if it was possible to] be baking everything.”
Holtermann added that she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through,” rather than outright refusing service.
Nevertheless, the bakery was ultimately able to bake at least 50 of the requested desserts, despite the boiler issues.
A press conference was also called in response to Goldberg’s claims, in which Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella stood up for the bakery.
“The bottom line here, is after, we’re gonna call up Jill (the owner), who has had to endure something that she shouldn’t have to endure. These people are up at 3 or 4 o’clock every morning. The sacrifices they’ve made, the holiday’s they’ve missed with their families – to make Staten Island better, they have sacrificed for 145 years,” Fossella declared.
“They’re still here and they’re still strong despite what other people on television have to say, and frankly the people who defamed the Holtermann family should apologize to the Holtermann family for making stuff up to suit their needs. Not everybody wakes up every day and thinks about politics, a good business person doesn’t care about anybody’s politics,” he continued.
