The final blow against Alex Jones’ Infowars has been at least temporarily staved off after a federal judge raised questions about the auction process for the popular anti-establishment website.

On Thursday, the satirical outlet The Onion was awarded the winning bid for Infowars at a bankruptcy auction and plans to relaunch it as a parody website, the final insult to its founder who was sued into oblivion by the parents of Sandy Hook Elementary students whose children were the victims of a 2012 massacre by a mentally disturbed gunman.

The parents saw the fruits of their lawfare pay off when they were rewarded with a $1.4 billion defamation judgment against Jones in 2020, a staggering sum that forced him into bankruptcy, a big win for the censorship regime that has tried to have him de-platformed for years.

But the sale to The Onion which had the backing of the Sandy Hook parents is now in limbo after Judge Christopher M. Lopez paused the process on what Jones has described as a “rigged, fake auction.”

“We’re all going to an evidentiary hearing and I’m going to figure out exactly what happened,” Lopez said. “No one should feel comfortable with the results of this auction.”

Jones railed against the process in a series of videos posted to X, stating that his lawyers “had a total consensus: they’ve never seen anything like it. This was a private, secret sale… basically illegal, this is bankruptcy crime on its face disguised as an auction that wasn’t an auction.”

“The people didn’t even pay real money, they paid some weird FIAT thing that wasn’t agreed to by the judge’s order and then they had the corporate media say that The Onion bought Infowars,” he said.

Before The Onion was awarded the winning bid and control over Infowars, state media outlet NPR reported that the auction may not be determined by who was willing to pay the most money.

According to NPR, “Whoever wins the auction might not necessarily be the highest bidder. The U.S. trustee has broad discretion to “determine the highest or otherwise best bid or bids” [emphasis added] according to the auction firms Tranzon Asset Advisors and ThreeSixty Asset Advisors.”

“We thought it would be a very funny joke if we bought this thing, probably one of the better jokes we’ve ever told,” Ben Collins, CEO of The Onion said, according to the New York Post.

“The (Sandy Hook) families decided they would effectively join our bid, back our bid, to try to get us over the finish line. Because by the end of the day, it was us or Alex Jones, who could either continue this website unabated, basically unpunished, for what he’s done to these families over the years, or we could make a dumb, stupid website, and we decided to do the second thing,” he added.

The date for the hearing has yet to be announced.
