Brazil’s Supreme Court on Wednesday was evacuated after two explosions occurred near the building, which resulted in the death of the suspected bomber, according to Brazilian officials.
The first explosion, which occurred in a square near Congress and the presidential palace, took place at 7:30 p.m. local time. The second explosion occurred outside of the Supreme Court, when the suspect attempted to enter the building, CNN reported.
The bombings are being investigated as a suicide bombing, and there are no other suspects, Celina Leão, the vice-governor of the Federal District told reporters. She also recommended the country’s Congress be closed on Thursday in an abundance of caution, per United Press International.
The country’s Supreme Court justices were all evacuated on Wednesday night, and the Three Powers Plaza, which is home to all three branches of Brazil’s government, has been blocked off. An investigation into the attack is still ongoing, and the motive for the explosions is not clear.
The bombings come five days before Brazil hosts the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro. The attack has prompted security concerns ahead of the summit. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is also expected to visit Brazil on Nov. 20.
