The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of the Inspector General on Wednesday released a report that highlighted four major “management and performance” challenges facing the agency.

The 85-page report found that the four challenges; transparency, accountability, efficiency, and sustainability, reflect vulnerability in the department’s “programs, operations, and responsibilities.”

The department’s responsibilities and missions include protecting American borders, securing cyberspace and infrastructure, and countering terrorism.

“These challenges may hinder its ability to advance essential missions and protect the Nation and its citizens,” the inspector general’s office wrote.

The report also highlighted the actions the department has already taken to respond to the challenges, as well as the actions it should take or is taking to address the concerns.

“These challenges are not wholly representative of all vulnerabilities confronting the Department,” the office added.
