There were appeals to racism in this campaign, and there is racial bias in this country and there is sexism in this country, and anybody who thinks that that did not in any way impact on the outcome of this race is wrong.
As Sir Bedevire (Terry Jones) might say, who is this who is so wise in the ways of politics? Why, it’s David Axelrod explaining why Kamala Harris lost the election to Donald Trump. For the Democratic strategist, also known as “Obama’s narrator” and “Axe,” this not a new line of thinking.
In his massive Believer, published in 2015, Axe explained that since Obama was black, those who oppose his policies could be charged with racism. In similar style in 2024, Kamala Harris is a “woman of color,” so those who vote against her must be racist and sexist. This calls for a response in the style of Mr. Barnard (Graham Chapman) in the Monty Python argument sketch:
Don’t give me that, you snotty-faced heap of parrot droppings! Shut your festering gob, you tit! Your type really makes me puke, you vacuous, toffee-nosed, malodorous, pervert!
Axelrod also calls to mind a colorful phrase of WWII vets, about putting something “where no light shines.” If anybody told Axe to do the same it would be hard to blame them. Fair to say, the people have had enough of this guy, and the pompous jive he promoted. And as the election confirmed, the people had no use for the vacuous Kamala Harris, the figurehead for what would have been the composite character’s fourth term.
