Congressman Gerry Connolly, D-Va., revealed on Thursday that he has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

Connolly, 77,  said he doesn’t have symptoms aside and will be undergoing chemotherapy immediately.

“Cancer can be tough. But so am I,” Connolly wrote in a letter to his constituents posted on social media. “I will attack this the only way I know how – with Irish fight and humor.”

Connolly won a ninth term in the House in Tuesday’s election. He was first elected in 2008.
