Already reeling from a quarter-million lost subscribers to the newspaper he rescued from oblivion 11 years ago, in protest of his last-minute decision to spike an already written endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos stands to make even more enemies in the media class through his effusive congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump.
“Big congratulations to our 45th and now 47th President on an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory,” the Amazon founder wrote on X. “No nation has bigger opportunities. Wishing @realDonaldTrump all success in leading and uniting the America we all love.”
Bezos turned back speculation that he spiked the endorsement to preserve his other businesses’ federal contracts in a Post op-ed, saying that presidential endorsements “create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence. Ending them is a principled decision, and it’s the right one.”
“Just imagine the WaPo newsroom right now,” American Council of Trustees and Alumni fellow Steve McGuire wrote in response to Bezos. Another X user noted Amazon shares jumped with Trump’s victory, crossing $200: “Congrats for … all the money you just made.”
