Bob Ferguson has won Washington’s Gubernatorial race.
Democrat Bob Ferguson and Republican Dave Reichert went head-to-head in the closely contested race to be Washington’s next governor.
Ferguson is a lawyer and politician serving as the 18th attorney general of Washington. He was first elected into politics in 2012.
While on the campaign trail, one of the topics that Ferguson mentioned often was public safety. He has promised that $100 million in his budget will go towards salaries and bonuses to hire officers.
One endorsement that he was proud of during his campaign was from Planned Parenthood.
When asked in an interview if he was in favor of rewriting state law by loosening abortion restrictions beyond the standard 24 months, he answered, “I think our law is clear, and embedded and secure, firm reproductive freedoms for women in Washington in contrast to Reichert when he was in Congress he voted three times for a nationwide abortion ban.”
His campaign website states, “Bob forced the companies that fueled the opioid epidemic to pay more than a billion dollars to address the harm done to our community, secured record penalties to combat dark money in politics, and took on polluters, scam artists, and special interests to protect Washingtonians.”
Ferguson also boasts that he is “an internationally rated chess master. He has twice won the Washington State Chess Championship.”
The Democrat gubernatorial candidate is endorsed by The Seattle Times outlet and Democrat Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.
Ferguson’s GOP opponent, Dave Reichert, does not support a nationwide abortion ban. However, he supports abortions beyond the 24 months in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother’s life is in danger.
Reichert spent twenty-five years with the King County Sheriff’s Office.
He collaborated with committed investigators, medical examiners, and volunteers during his time there in order to apprehend the “Green River Killer.” In addition to receiving the Attorney General’s Award for valor, Reichert received two Medals of Valor Awards and the National Sheriff’s Association’s Sheriff of the Year award.
His political interests include fighting crime, creating safe communities, tackling cost of living struggles, creating jobs and growing the economy, protecting children, and governmental accountability.
Reichert served as the U.S. representative for Washington’s 8th congressional district from 2005 to 2019.
“As Governor, I will use my experience on the street and in the trenches to change this lawlessness and make you and your family feel safe again,” Reichert maintained.
Additionally, after he left Congress in 2019, Reichert responded to a humanitarian crisis by working throughout Central America to combat human trafficking, his campaign website stated.
“I’m running for all the families here in Washington state,” Reichert stated while on the campaign trail. “I’m running because I know the criminal justice system is absolutely broken. I’m running because we’re not helping the homeless. In fact, it’s gotten worse. Yes, we can point to a few successes, but we’ve wasted a lot of money on the homeless. I’m running because the economy is so out of control that our young people can’t even look at buying a condominium or their first home, and I’m running because our education system needs to be refocused.”
At the time of this reporting, Ferguson won with 56.5% of the vote compared to Reichert’s 43.5%
62% of the vote has been counted.
