Andy Kim has won the New Jersey Senate race.
Democrat Representative Andy Kim won tonight after facing Republican challenger Curtis Bashaw in the race for the Garden State’s Senate seat.
Notably, former Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) announced his resignation from his seat in August, after being found guilty of 16 federal counts including bribery, corruption, obstruction of justice, and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt.
Kim and Bashaw faced off in three live-broadcast debates leading up to the election, with topics centering around housing, abortion, immigration, the Israel-Hamas war and more.
Top issues Kim’s campaign focused on included strengthening healthcare, protecting the environment, reproductive rights, ending corruption in government, gun violence and more.
Kim grew up in South Jersey and is the proud son of Korean immigrants. He was elected to serve New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district in 2019.
“I believe more than ever that we need good, hardworking people focused on delivering tangible solutions, working where the rubber hits the road, and injecting some integrity and civility back into our politics,” congressman Kim said.
Bashaw received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is described as a “successful businessman and job creator, employing more than 1,000 people in New Jersey and New York.”
He ran on efforts to secure the border, invest in American energy while protecting the environment, inflation, standing with Israel, making healthcare affordable, etc.
Unlike most Republican’s, however, Bashaw is pro-choice.
“As a pro-choice married gay man, I believe that individuals deserve to make decisions about their lifestyle and healthcare in their own homes,” Bashaw said. “I strongly support the individual freedoms and rights of all Americans.”
At the time of this reporting, Kim won with 52.9% of the vote compared to Bashaw’s 44.8%
75% of the expected votes have been counted.
