Martin Heinrich has won New Mexico’s Senate race.

Democrat incumbent Heinrich faced off against Republican challenger Nella Domenici in the race for the state’s Senate seat.

Heinrich has served as senator of the Land of Enchantment since 2012, serving on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources, Appropriations, Intelligence, and Joint Economic Committees.

Before entering the political sphere, Heinrich worked at Kirtland Air Force Base as a mechanical engineer.

Heinrich centered his campaign around reproductive rights, energy, improving border security, immigration pathways, and trade, and growing New Mexico’s economy.

This was Domenici’s first run for public office.

Domenici earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, and a graduate degree from the Harvard Business School, eventually working her way up to CFO for Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund.

She is the daughter of Senator Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), the last Republican to be elected into the Senate from New Mexico voters, holding office from 1973 to 2009.

Domenici’s top issues focused on the border, violent crime, reducing abortion and increasing access to birth control, inflation and the rising cost of living, standing with Israel, defending the Second Amendment and more.

Both candidates released several attack ads about each other throughout the campaign, with Heinrich saying Domenici is running because of her father and wealth, and Domenici accusing Heinrich of allowing illegal immigrants and drugs to enter the country through the state’s open border.

At the time of this reporting, Heinrich won with 54.9% of the vote compared to Domenici’s 45.1%

69% of the expected votes have been counted.
