Sheldon Whitehouse has won Rhode Island’s Senate race.
Democrat incumbent Whitehouse faced off against Republican challenger Representative Patricia Morgan in the race for the Ocean State’s Senate seat.
Whitehouse was first elected senator in 2007. Prior to that, he served as the State Attorney General from 1999 to 2003 and as United States Attorney from 1994 to 1998.
The 69-year-old graduated from Yale University and also received a J.D. from the University of Virginia.
Whitehouse centered his campaign around reproductive rights, protecting social security and Medicare, fighting climate change, protecting national security and fixing the immigration system.
“We need comprehensive immigration reform to bring undocumented workers out of the shadows to become law-abiding, tax-paying residents; we need border security that is effective and humane; and we need businesses to grow and create jobs,” Whitehouse wrote on his website.
Representative Morgan was elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in November 2020. Her current term ends in January 2025.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Kent State University and has a Master’s degree in education from Rhode Island College.
Before entering politics, Morgan worked as a financial advisor and a special education teacher.
Her policies focused on immigration, federal spending/inflation, pursuing an abundant energy policy, gun rights, and abortion.
As abortion remained a top issue this election cycle, Morgan pointed out that her opponent advocates for abortions up until the moment of birth. While she’s pro-life, Morgan suggested making contraceptives readily available and inexpensive.
“I believe that the goal should be safe, legal, and rare, not criminal,” Morgan wrote on her campaign website. “I don’t want young parents forced to either have an unwanted child or be forced to make a terrible choice.”
At the time of this reporting, Whitehouse won with 55.7% of the vote compared to Morgan’s 44.3%
11% of the votes have been counted.
