This is your government at work, people.

The internet is outraged after New York decided that the proper way to handle a complaint about a man keeping a squirrel as a pet would be to come to his home and kill the animal.

Mark Longo, an NYC resident, rescued a baby squirrel and has been raising it in his home as a pet named Peanut. Peanut had over half a million Instagram followers and was a viral sensation. But some animal nut called the city of New York on him and tragedy ensued.

Yes, the state environmental conservation department took this man’s pet squirrel and killed it. Because … I guess because the squirrel is now better off this way?

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and Chemung County Department of Health announced through a statement on Friday afternoon that both a squirrel and racoon confiscated from a residence on Wednesday had been euthanized to test for rabies. The statement said a person involved in the confiscation investigation was bitten by the squirrel.

Peanut the Squirrel, who boasted 534,000 followers on Instagram, was taken from his home in Pine City, New York, by the New York Department of Environmental Conservation on Wednesday morning. Peanut, also known as PNUT, was the beloved pet of content creator Mark Longo. In more than 1,400 posts shared to Instagram, Peanut can be seen munching on waffles, jumping through hula-hoops, and greeting Longo home from work.

I don’t know what kind of person sees the videos above of this dude chilling with a squirrel he rescued as a baby and then thinks to themselves “I’ll call the state on him!”

And now, thanks to this concerned citizen, Peanut is dead.

This is really an insane story.

Now, I’m not sure about crying over a squirrel and a raccoon … but having the state raid your home has to be a traumatizing experience.

You don’t have to be an animal lover to realize that the government is way overstepping what their bounds should have been in this case. It’s literally insane.

They intimidated my wife to ask her her immigration status.

Welp, we’ve finally found the type of criminal that the Sanctuary City of New York feels necessary to threaten with deportation.

The way Mark and his wife were treated is absolutely crazy.

And they killed his raccoon too!
What a tragedy. Just the latest victim murdered by the state for no reason.
I hope Peanut rests easy.
Rest in the arms of your forefather, Harambe.
