Monopoly isn’t just fun and games, it’s also an excellent opportunity to create racial divide, shame little white kids, and teach children about how unfair and racist the world is.
Local councils across England have advised parents of white children to give them extra Monopoly money, let them skip jail time, and give them a ‘head start on buying property’ to teach about “white privilege” as part of anti-racism guidance.
Seriously, this stuff can be found on city government websites in England:
Brits had thoughts:
The guidance, titled “How to raise anti-racist children,” was created back in 2020 for Barbie manufacturers Matte following Black Lives Matter protests. It’s now being used as a parenting resource by Southampton, Leicestershire County Council, and London councils.
The goal is to “raise a new generation of allies with the tools needed to facilitate change.”
According to the guide, one way to do this is by talking to your children about racial issues and white supremacy while engaging in fun, everyday activities such as bike riding, hiking, baking, story reading, or playing games. Toys and books featuring Black characters are also recommended to prompt conversations on race.
They urge parents to be “uncomfortably honest” about any racist comments or actions they themselves have made, such as questioning yourself if you “draw your child closer to you when you pass a group of black youths?”
For young children, ages 0-3, the advice includes using dolls and picture books representing diverse cultures and avoiding songs “steeped in white culture” like Baa Baa Black Sheep. For children aged 9 to 12, it suggests “board game metaphors” to explain privilege.
Monopoly, apparently, is the perfect opportunity for parents to give white players more advantages to represent real-life “white supremacy and privilege.”
So, folks, next time you’re trying to enjoy a fun game with your children or maybe heading to the museum or something, stop and think, “How can I make this about racism?”
