House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday laughed off rumors that his “little secret” with former President Donald Trump that will keep Republicans in control of the House next week is “diabolical,” and that it was actually related to their efforts to improve voter turnout.
Trump teased that he had a “little secret” with Johnson during his Madison Square Garden rally in New York on Sunday. But the former president said that he would not tell voters what the secret was until after the 2024 elections, but that it could have a “big impact” on maintaining control of the House.
One Democratic lawmaker speculated that the “secret” was that Trump and Johnson would try to overturn the results of the election if Trump loses next week.
“He really does call it our secret,” Johnson said at a rally in Pennsylvania. “It’s not diabolical. It’s actually very good. It’s going to help us with the turnout. All this is blowing their minds. They just can’t — They cannot fathom that Trump and Vance have the support that they do around the country like they do from — from new demographics of people.”
The speaker said that he expects Republicans will see record support from Hispanic, black, and Jewish voters.
Johnson told The Hill that the speculation about it being something more dire is “absolute, utter nonsense.” The House Speaker has committed to certifying the results of the 2024 elections, if it is a “free and fair election.”
“I’m a lifelong constitutional law attorney. We’re going to respect the law. We’re going to follow the constitution to a T,” Johnson said. “I’ve proven that over and over and over. So all this conjecture is actually hilarious to us, that people are apoplectic about this. It’s a — it’s one of our get out the vote strategies. That’s what we’re talking about. And it’s almost a tongue-in-cheek thing.”
Johnson also pointed at “secrets” that Democrats appeared to hold in the past, such as information regarding President Joe Biden’s health and the truth about first son Hunter Biden’s laptop.
