The Georgia secretary of state’s office fended off a cyberattack against its website that allows to request absentee ballots.

The cyberattack was likely from a foreign nation, according to the secretary’s office, Fox News reported.

The office’s cyber team was notified of a dramatic spike in attempts to access the state’s absentee ballot portal on Oct. 14. The portal was slowed but not stopped.

“[The event] had the hallmarks of a foreign power or a foreign entity working at the behest of a foreign power,” the chief operating officer for the secretary of state’s office, Gabriel Sterling, said Wednesday.

The cyberattack was stopped “thanks to robust safeguards in place,” he added.
