Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced in Oct. 2022 that she was leaving the Democratic Party to become an Independent, blasting the party as an “elitist cabal of warmongers.” A full two years later, on Tuesday, the former congresswoman announced that she was joining the Republican Party.

Fittingly, Gabbard made the announcement while campaigning in Greensboro, N.C., with former President Donald Trump

“The Democrat Party has no home for people like us, but we do have a home in the Republican Party — where we are welcomed with open arms by President Trump and so many of you who love our country,” she said.

“And it is because of my love for our country and specifically because of the leadership that President Trump has brought to transform the Republican Party and bring it back to the party of the people, and the party of peace, that I’m proud to stand here with you today, with President Trump, and announce that I’m joining the Republican Party,” Gabbard said to the roar of the crowd.

“I’m joining the party of the people, the party of equality, the party that was founded to fight against and end slavery in this country. It is the party of common sense, and the party that is led by a president who has the courage and the strength to fight for peace,” she continued.

The high praise struck quite the contrast to Gabbard’s views of her former party when she announced her departure.

“I can no longer remain in today’s Democratic Party that is now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness, who divide us by racializing every issue & stoke anti-white racism, actively work to undermine our God-given freedoms, are hostile to people of faith & spirituality, demonize the police & protect criminals at the expense of law-abiding Americans, believe in open borders, weaponize the national security state to go after political opponents, and above all, dragging us ever closer to nuclear war,” Gabbard said at the time in a post shared on X.

Gabbard is a member of Trump’s transition team and she told rallygoers, “You know, I was a Democrat for over 20 years. Today’s Democrat Party is completely unrecognizable, which points to the clear choice that we have on this Election Day.”

Trump said Gabbard’s announcement was “a surprise,” adding it was a “great honor” to have influenced her to become a member of the GOP.

Taking to X, Gabbard shared footage of the rally along with a short message.

“For independent-thinkers like myself, there is no home in the Democrat Party. However, there is a home for us in the Republican Party,” she wrote. “The Republican Party of warmongering elite Dick Cheney is in the past. Trump’s GOP is a big open tent party of the people, equality, commonsense, and the party that is led by a President who has the courage and strength to fight for peace.”

“Tonight I stood with President Trump and announced I am joining the Republican Party. President Trump is our best and only hope in this election to lead our country toward a future where every one of us can live in a truly free, peaceful, and prosperous nation. Now is the time for us to stand together, vote for Trump and save our country,” she added.

The addition of Tulsi Gabbard to the GOP ranks was seen as a big win on social media, especially when considering that Democrats get Liz Cheney in return — Cheney has not announced a party change as of yet, insisting that she is still a “conservative.”
