Presidents Biden and Obama chatted at Ethel Kennedy’s funeral last week. Video of the funeral allowed the New York Post to hire a lip reader to decipher the conversation. Biden “griped to Obama,” as the Post put it, that “she” (Kamala Harris) is “not as strong as me” — with Obama agreeing “that’s true.” But, Obama assured him, they have time to rectify the situation.

As I’ve been inferring from the changes in the Harris campaign over the past few weeks, it’s apparent that it isn’t all going swimmingly. One such change is the move from the vapid “joy” that initially buoyed the campaign. The campaign has moved on from joy to rage.

The rage is directed at Trump. Picking up the baton from Biden himself, the Harris campaign now attacks Trump as a threat to, well, you know what. Harris is no longer selling joy. She’s selling fear.

Harris supposedly skipped the Al Smith Dinner last week to barnstorm in the battleground states. The mainstream media have credulously — or is it dutifully? — repeated the Harris campaign’s statement to this effect, as in this NBC News story. During the dinner, Harris was campaigning in Wisconsin.

Catholics constitute 25 percent of the electorate. Was it really worth offending those who might notice for a night in Wisconsin? I don’t think so.

I want to read the minds of Harris’s handlers to explain why she would have skipped the Al Smith Dinner. Appearing at the dinner and speaking as one of the featured attractions imposes a discipline. You have to treat your counterparts within the realm of civilized discourse. See, for example, President Trump’s treatment of Senator Schumer and Schumer’s response during Trump’s speech (I posted the video here). Schumer was visibly impassive most of the time, but at one point he had to cover his face to hide his amusement.

Given the current situation of the Harris campaign, Harris can’t afford to treat Trump as a political opponent within conventional boundaries. He’s a fascist. He opposes the Constitution. If he’s elected, he will lock his political opponents up.

This is of course the object of the Biden-Harris administration specifically with respect to Trump, but never mind. Trump is Hitler, or Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini. In other words, Harris’s absence from the Al Smith Dinner derives from the desperation of the Harris campaign in its current phase.

In the estimation of the Harris campaign, they can’t treat Trump as anything but a menace to American society. No joking allowed.
